Pastures and grazing

A range of resources are available to support producers manage pasture quality and quantity to reduce supplementary feeding and maintain an acceptable level of sheep productivity, health and welfare.

In the agricultural area of Western Australia with its Mediterranean climate, most pastures are comprised of annual species, which actively grow from late autumn through to mid- to late-spring. However, irrespective of the rainfall and length of the growing season which can vary from less than 4 months in the eastern wheatbelt to more than 7 months in the high rainfall south-west there are periods in the year when pasture supply and livestock demand do not match.

  • Pastoral Remote Sensing

Based on satellite imagery, the Pastoral Remote Sensing application provides mapping tools and estimates of cumulative rainfall, total green biomass, total dry matter and normalised difference vegetation index for every pastoral lease in Western Australia.

  • Pastures from Space™

This app uses remote sensing to provide estimates of feed on offer and Pasture Growth Rate on a weekly basis during the growing season. Producers can select their property to gain an understanding of productivity and assist with budgeting.

  • PestFacts WA

PestFacts WA is an interactive reporting service that provides risk alerts, and current information and advice on pests and diseases threatening crops and pastures throughout WA's grainbelt during each growing season.
